I am an Australian artist living in Perth, WA. I took up painting professionally about thirteen years ago after retiring from university teaching. I regularly participate and sell in exhibitions in Western Australia and I am also represented online on Bluethumb.com.au/jenny-ellis-newman where I have enjoyed numerous sales in WA and in the eastern states.
My formal art education consists of four years of art study at high school in Sydney followed by a year at East Sydney Technical College but I have always loved art and particularly drawing and painting people. Although my preferred medium is acrylic I also experiment with mixed media and a variety of styles and subjects. I love to play with bright colours and, in particular, those that are complementary, enjoying the brightness achieved by their juxtaposition. My favourite subjects to paint are seascapes, birds, animals, abstracts and children but I am willing to paint other subjects when commissioned. I love to take on challenges and extend my skills with a variety of subjects, often working on up to four paintings at a time as my mood takes me. I have a large studio attached to my home and there is always a painting in progress on one of my easels.
A narrative artist, I am inspired that my paintings should tell a story. I am also a romantic at heart and this is particularly evident in my paintings of loving couples and birds. My beachscapes and depictions of children at play are well recognised and have proven to be some of my most successful paintings to date, with paintings also selling internationally and interstate. Many of my paintings have been the result of people liking my work and commissioning similar paintings. My artwork has enjoyed generous exposure in numerous exhibitions and my most recent achievement was earning first place for my painting of an underwater reef. A keen snorkeler and underwater photographer, I have many photos of coral reefs and sea life which provide inspiration for my work.
